A mother was and killed by her during a work while her co-workers watched in horror. “A member of a conference call dialed 911 when one of the participants, Shamaya Lynn, appeared to be in need of help, “ Altamonte Springs Police Department said in a statement via Facebook.

The 21-year-old mother was on a conference call when a loud “noise” was heard in the background and “Lynn fell backward and never returned to the call,” the statement continued.

When authorities arrived on scene, Lynn was found from a “fatal gunshot wound” to her head. “Investigators determined that the injury was caused by a toddler who found a loaded handgun, which was left unsecured by an adult in the apartment,” the police department said.

Investigators stated the loaded firearm belonged to the father of Lynn’s two children. Both children were unharmed during the horrific accident and are now in the care of relatives, WESH reported.

The investigation is ongoing and detectives are determining whether or not to file charges against the gun owner.

“To anyone and everyone tuning into this story if you don’t have a firearm please keep it locked and secured, this incident could be avoided,” Officer Roberto Ruiz Jr. told the news outlet.

The Altamonte Springs police department is now offering locks for guns, free of charge.

Shootings by children, although tragic, are not uncommon. According to gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, there were at least 369 unintentional shootings by children below 18 in 2020, with 142 of them involved deaths. In an average year, 2,752 people die by guns in , the group states.
