As Page Six reported, when ’s new video I Am The Stripclub premiered online it was rather apparent that something about her appearance wasn’t quite right. Normally very fair skinned, the singer was noticeably darker. In fact, much darker. Even her trademark long blonde hair was black.

Immediately fans of the Fancy rapper made their disapproval known on social media. One comment went as far as to say that Azalea’s new look in her video was akin to performing in brown face. Others openly accused the singer of blackfishing.

One fan reacted to the video by comparing Azalea’s dark skin to a scene in the 2008 film Tropic Thunder, where one character told another, “You’re Australian! Be Australian!” Yet, another post read, “You are telling me that THIS is Azalea? When will the blackfishing cease? When.”

According to Page Six not all fans were offended. One post read, “But it just so happens she’s imitating a black female aesthetic surrounded by a bunch of black people in the background.” Almost comically one commenter suggested that Azalea had simply “gotten darker” over the years from “tanning.” Another fan blamed it on the lighting.

As one might expect it didn’t take long for Azalea to defend herself from the negative reaction to her darker appearance calling the claims, “ridiculous and baseless.” She also claims to have been using the same shade foundation for the past three years.

“I can’t care about something that ridiculous and baseless. I’m wearing a shade 6 in armarni foundation, it’s the same shade I’ve worn for the last 3 years,” Azalea posted to her Twitter page. “It’s the same shade in every music video since sally Walker. Suddenly I wear a black wig in a club scene & it’s an issue.”
