Damon’s son Christopher, told ABC7‘s George Pennacchio that his father had been struggling with renal failure. Christopher also said that General Hospital “was his favorite place to be. He loved playing Alan and was always so appreciative of that role and that job. It was his passion.”

The sad news was also confirmed by the show’s executive producer Frank Valentini. “On behalf of everyone at #GH, I want to extend my deepest condolences to Stuart Damon’s family and all who loved him. Stuart was an absolute legend of our industry and he’ll be sorely missed. @GeneralHospital,” Valentini tweeted.

Throughout his 50 years in show business, Damon also appeared on Broadway, films and other TV shows. He began his career in 1965 when he played the prince in Cinderella opposite Lesley Ann Warren. He also starred in The Champions and Space: 1999, As the World Turns, Days of Our Lives, Diagnosis Murder, HotelThe New Mike Hammer, Strong Medicine and more.

He received seven Daytime Emmy nominations before taking one home in 1999 for Best Supporting Actor in General Hospital.

Costars, friends and fans took to social media to pay tribute.

“Broken hearted to hear of the passing of Stuart Damon. He played my adopted dad on General Hospital for 7 years and he was the most kind, wonderful, loving, supportive person. He always made me laugh and made me feel safe on set. I love you, Stewy. Rest well now, my friend,” Amber Tamblyn tweeted.

“God Bless you #StuartDamon You are and always will be so very special to all of us who were lucky to work + play with you over the years. You will be missed but never forgotten. Your spirit will shine eternally in heaven,” Jackie Zeman said. “We have shared so many good times over the years. God Bless #StuartDamon,” she added.

“#StuartDamon was such a gentleman when I met him in 2006 on #GeneralHospital . A wonderful man and actor. Sending love to his family,” Sebastian Roché wrote.
