The 99-year-old Duke died in the early hours of Friday, April 9, according to Buckingham Palace, who confirmed he passed away peacefully at his home, Windsor Castle.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the statement read, adding that “further announcements will be made in due course.”

In addition, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shared a statement to their Archewell site. “In loving memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh,” the site’s homepage read. “Thank you for your service… you will be greatly missed.”

“[Philip] was an environmentalist, and a champion of the natural world long before it was fashionable,” Johnson began. “With his Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme he shaped and inspired the lives of countless young people and at literally tens of thousands of events he fostered their hopes and encouraged their ambitions.”

Johnson said the public will remember the Duke for “all of this and above all for his steadfast support for Her Majesty the Queen. Not just as her consort, by her side every day of her reign, but as her husband, her ‘strength and stay’, of more than 70 years.”
Philip had four children, eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

His death follows his lengthy health battle in the hospital after he was admitted to King Edward VII’s Hospital on February 16 as “a precautionary measure.” He was later taken to St. Bartholomew for a heart procedure and returned to King Edward VII for “rest and recuperation,” Buckingham Palace announced at the time.

After his 28-day stay at the hospital, the longest time he had ever been hospitalized, Philip was discharged and returned to his home with the Queen.
