This 2009 slasher may take place on the romantic holiday, but this film is anything but warm and fuzzy. The bloody blockbuster is set in the mining town of Harmony, where a drilling accident is caused by the son of the owner, Tom Hanniger (Jensen Ackles). The mine collapses, burying six miners alive. The rescue team finds only one man named Harry Warden alive, but in coma, and the other miners murdered by his pickax, and they conclude that Harry killed them to save oxygen for himself. On Valentine’s Day, Harry awakes from his coma in the local hospital, and he kills 22 people, including a group of teenagers that are partying in the mine. Harry is killed by the deputy, leaving only a few survivors, including Tom.
Ten years later, Tom returns to Harmony after the death of his father, and a maniac in a miner’s mask strikes again. We won’t spoil the rest but expect lots, and we mean lots of gore, enough to get your mind off any would-be Valentine that didn’t pan out. If you can stomach it, make it a double feature, and watch the 1981 original film and then remake.
