One of my all time favorite horror franchises is pushing through the coronavirus pandemic as best they can and looking to bring us a new installation of the series in 2021. One Media just released this sneak peak into production of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It:
The third Conjuring movie follows Ed and Lorraine Warren as they get pulled into the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson. Johnson’s 1981 trial is known colloquially as the “Devil Made Me Do It” case and was the first time in US history that demonic possession was used as a defense strategy. Arne Cheyenne Johnson killed his landlord during an argument. Months earlier the Warrens and Johnson were present for an exorcism on an 11-year-old boy during which Johnson taunted the demon and urged it to possess him in order to save the boy’s life. During the murder, Johnson was said to be “growling like an animal”.
There’s also a lot of coverage of the court case since it was the first time demonic possession was used. Here’s an interview with the Warrens:
And some more background on the case:
If you’re as interested in the backstory to the Conjuring movies in general and as obsessed with Ed and Lorraine Warren as I am, there is a fantastic and VERY CREEPY book that Vera Farminga recommends, The Demonologist. Of the book, Vera said:
“It is unlike any book I have ever read. It’s a book about mystical theology. In it, one learns just how and why mystical phenomena occur. It scared the daylights out of me. Profoundly. The preface insists that it is not dangerous to read and that ‘knowledge is power.’ Whatever. I felt a sense of terror every time I cracked it open. I never read the book in the sanctity of my home. I could only read it in flight, funnily enough. Somehow I felt safeguarded in an airplane.”
The Conjuring 3 was originally scheduled to be released in September 2020, but is now scheduled for June 4, 2021.
