No way, right?
Famously, Casey Becker (played by Drew Barrymore) died at the hands of Ghostface in the cold open of the original Scream movie. Killing off the movie’s biggest star was an allusion to Hitchcock killing off the biggest star in Psycho halfway through the movie. The move shocks audiences and makes the entire film even more creepy because the creators have shown us no one is safe and any of the remaining characters could be killed at any moment. In particular, Casey Becker’s death scene was so gruesome that director Wes Craven went to war with the MPAA, who wanted to give the movie an NC-17 rating due to all the gore. Craven had to lie and say he only had one take of the scene in order to get it through with an R rating.
Here’s the scene in which Casey and her boyfriend Steve bite it:
As a special Halloween treat, Drew Barrymore shared with us a parallel universe that answers the question “What if Casey Becker lived?”
As a bonus, she produced another video in which actors talk about how their iconic Scream characters were killed off:
And here’s a clip of Rory Culkin talking about his character from Scream 4:
We love the Scream content Drew!!!
