Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. Who cares? When it comes to food, just shove it in your mouth and get on with it, right?

If you agree with that, then it’s safe to say that you’re not a connoisseur of the finer foods in life. Take sushi for an example, a lovingly crafted delicacy which is not only delicious but ornate in its design.

Is it fair to stuff such a delicate snack into your mouth in the same nonchalant way as you would a french fry from McDonald’s? No, it’s not. Sushi deserves better.

One person who knows the value of sushi is Nobu Matsuhisa, the owner of the famed Nobu Restaurant and Hotels. As the man who brought us the most recognizable Japanese restaurant chain in the world, it’s safe to say that he knows what he is talking about when it comes to sushi.

So when he says that you’ve been eating your California Roll wrong all this time, it’s safe to say that it’s worth listening…

Here the master explains. Watch and learn…

According to the sushi master, there are certain rules to follow if you want to eat sushi the traditional way.

With fast food chains such as Wasabi and Itsu serving sushi on the high street to the masses, it’s easy to see why we have collected some weird habits when tucking into our sashimi snack box.

For example, according to Nobu we don’t need that extra wasabi at all. Why? Because it should always be served between the rice and fish and thus, any extra is unnecessary surplus.

Oh, and this may make those of us who challenged by chopsticks: you don’t necessarily need to use them, if you fancy picking it up with your fingers then this is totally acceptable!

As long as you eat in one clean bite then you’re not committing any cardinal sins against Japanese culture!
