Us humans typically recoil in fear when we come across rats. We tend to assume that they’re dirty and that they carry nasty diseases. And we will never stop associating them with the black plague that wiped out 50 million people in the 14th century.
However, with more rats than humans in the world, their existence is something that we have to come to terms with. Maybe if we came to the realization that rats are more like humans than we give them credit for, we wouldn’t fear them quite as much.
And as if to prove that rodents are just like humans, a rat was recently filmed “taking a shower” in a bathroom sink. The bizarre video was recorded in Huaraz City, Peru, and the rat appears to be determined to scrub itself squeaky clean using soapy water.
Amazingly, the creature can also be seen washing its armpits in the 48-second clip.
Take a look at the amusing video for yourself:
The video, which was supposedly taken by electronic DJ Jose Correa, has widely been shared on social media and has now garnered nearly 40 million views.
Correa said that on an otherwise ordinary Saturday morning, he spotted the rat washing itself in the sink when he was about to take a shower. Naturally, he was pretty shocked at the uncanny sight.
“He was just like a human, I’ve never seen anything like it,” Correa recalled. “It went on for about 30 seconds, and then he ran off. I think he just wanted to give himself a good clean.
“I care a lot about animals so I wanted to protect his privacy,” he added. “I would never want to hurt him. So I just filmed him and let him go. I never expected it would be this popular. I can’t believe it.”
Correa also admitted he was surprised that the video, which he recorded on his cell phone, had become viral so quickly. Well, I guess that’s shown us not to underestimate the desire of a rat to keep itself clean.
