In spite of the fact that we live in a relatively free society, we do have very strict expectations when it comes to our ideas about beauty. And those of us who choose not to conform to these restrictive ideals are often regarded as outcasts.
One way in which some people choose not to adhere to society’s ideas on beauty is by deliberately not falling in line with gender expectations in the way we present ourselves.
And often it is bloggers and those with a substantial online following who pave the way in terms of changing people’s perceptions about their bodies.
In fact, back in 2016, 20-year-old fitness blogger Morgan Mikenas made the decision to change the way she perceived her own beauty by resisting societal norms related to women and their body hair.
Such societal norms state that women should ideally have long hair and men should have short hair. But as we all know, it goes far beyond the hair we have on our heads.
While women are encouraged to have hairless legs and armpits while men are told that being hairy is especially manly.
Early this year, the Indiana-born fitness blogger posted a video on YouTube called Why I Don’t Shave, (below) where she talked about the reasoning behind her decision to stop shaving.
“I haven’t shaved my legs for over a year, and I will never go back,” she wrote in the video’s description “The purpose of this video is not to shame people who do shave, I just want to speak on how it’s helped me become more comfortable within myself, and maybe inspire others to do something that makes them feel confident.”
