Coming out as trans is never easy – yes, even in this day and age. Unfortunately, those who choose to transition in order to align their physical appearance with their gender identity often have to accept that they live in a society in which transphobia is still very rife.
While many trans people have to contend with the prospect of alienating their loved ones, and the threat of becoming a target for hate crimes, they will bravely choose to transition in spite of this.
Some trans people even document their journey so that during the process they can see how far they have progressed towards their ultimate goal.
Medically, there are different ways to transition. Some trans people will decide to go all the way by undergoing Sexual Reassignment Surgery. Others will go no further than Hormone Replacement Therapy, believing it has brought them sufficient results.
Some choose to do this in the form of a photo series, some will do it in the form of a written diary and others a mixture of both.
In fact, over a period of 17 months, one college student by the name of Selgal has shared photos showcasing her very impressive transformation from male to female while undergoing Hormone Replacement Therapy.
The pictures come complete with quotes from Selgal based on how she was feeling at the time the photo was taken, providing an insight into the process of HRT.
Throughout the project, the ambitious student made sure to document how she felt about her changing appearance during the process. Sometimes she felt disillusioned, but towards the end of the photo series, it is clear that she has soared in confidence.
“Two years pre HRT: Age 16, total pot head (get it?)”
“1st-month HRT, just started college. I always kept checking the mirror to see if I noticed any changes. But it turns out it takes a pretty long time for anything major”
Unfortunately, those who do undergo HRT will have to contend with the fact that it’s a very long, costly and risky process.
“Three months HRT, starting to feel better. Still depressed but finally starting to feel like me”
There are some insurance companies which will contribute towards the costs of parts of the process, but never the entire process. However, often they will contribute to everything from HRT to breast implants and vaginoplasty.
“Trying to be cute when I really wasn’t lol, this is around nine months HRT”
“I look like one of the dudes on Dateline in this pic lol, this was 11 months HRT”
“11 months, first picture I took of myself that I actually liked”
