All eyes have been on the North Korean cheerleading squad at this year’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. The young women appear to have endless optimism, continuously singing and cheering from the stands.
To get a firsthand look at the North Korean Cheerleaders in action, take a look at the footage below from this year’s winter Olympic games.
Yet behind their tireless smiles, there may be a very dark secret. A North Korean defector recently told Bloomberg Press that the cheerleading group is actually called the “pleasure squad” by insiders and that the girls are forced to perform sexual favors for high ranking officials.
“[The] troupe came here and performed with dances and songs, and it might seem like a fancy show on the outside [but] they also have to go to parties and provide sexual services,” said defector Lee So Yeon, a military musician who fled the country in 2008.
The sexual services are provided for none other than Kim Jong-un and other high ranking party members.
So Yeon added, “They go to the central Politburo party’s events and have to sleep with the people there, even if they don’t want it. Those sorts of human-rights infringements take place, where women have to follow what they are told to do with their bodies.”
