Every year, the videos that accompany our favorite chart-topping tracks become more and more sexually suggestive. There appears to be no boundaries in the music industry, where debauched behavior is seemingly celebrated (here’s looking at you, Miley).
But, as we know, sex sells. Well, at least in the Western world.
In Egypt, sex will only sell you a one-way ticket to jail, something that Egyptian pop star Shaimaa ‘Shyma’ Ahmed discovered after releasing the provocative video for her track, ‘I Have Issues’.
However, the 25-year-old singer didn’t have any idea just how many issues she was about to have after the video, which features the young talent seductively eating a banana in front of a whiteboard reading “#Class69”, was released for the world to see.
The rather erotic video fell flat in the singer’s extremely conservative home country, causing absolute outrage with citizens who thought it highly indecent.
As a result of this fury, Shyma was arrested in November. Just over a month later, the singer was found guilty of inciting debauchery and publishing an indecent film. The video’s director was also arrested and sentenced to two years in prison.
Shyma publicly apologized for her scandalous video via her Facebook page, which has since been deleted. “I didn’t imagine all this would happen and that I would be subjected to such a strong attack from everyone,” she wrote, before saying how truly sorry she was to those who’d taken the video “in an inappropriate way.”
The video certainly seems to scream “sex”…
